The new longer-term Avatar: The Way of Water opening weekend projections for the box office have the sequel nearly surpassing the success of James Cameron's first film. The sci-fi thriller of 2009 broke all sorts of box office records along its way to becoming the most-grossing film ever. Avatar's phenomenal box-office success has in turn drawn a lot of attention to the amount Avatar 2 will make. While no one can predict Avatar 2 to surpass the previous film's $2.9 billion worldwide, the movie's big budget and the fact that Disney is investing in the future of the franchise means that there's a lot of expectation for Avatar: The Way of Water to perform.

Based on Avatar: The Way Of Water Review -range tracking offered through Box Office Pro, Avatar: The Way of Water is now projected to make more than $135 million in its opening weekend in the US. Avatar: The Way Of Water Review -office debut included a $77M opening in the US, 13 years ago, in December, so the new projections suggest Avatar 2's first weekend at the box office to nearly double the original. The projections also suggest that the sequel will earn $475 million domestically by the completion the theatrical release, this is lower than earlier estimates and roughly half of what Avatar produced domestically.

A strong debut weekend Avatar: The Way of Water is a good opening for the sequel in the world of box-office. The reported $135M opening would mean the follow-up will make within a single weekend what took James Cameron's first film a whole week to earn. But, Avatar 2's box office isn't going to be able to find a way to beat the first. The reason Avatar had such a remarkable box office run is the movie's remarkable word-of-mouth and repeated watchings that kept the film relevant and on the screens for 234 days. It's not commonplace even for the largest movies. As a reference, Top Gun: Maverick reached 161 days in the year.

There's little doubt of the possibility that Avatar: The Way of Water will surpass the first film, but it does not need to become the highest-grossing movie ever to be a huge success. The anticipation for the sequel has mostly quelled the rhetoric that Avatar was not able to make a lasting impression on general audiences. Even even if the sequel's gross is only half that of the original film but it still makes $1.3 billion and that would make Avatar 2's $1 billion box office a massive success. This is enough to be the second highest-grossing movie of 2022.

There is still some pressure on Avatar 2's box-office to be successful enough that it will keep Cameron's sequel plans alive. He's contracted to create three sequels which will include Avatar 3 already completely filmed. A few scenes are also being worked for Avatar 4. However, the director has acknowledged that in the event that the sequel's box-office falls short and the audience is not at all interested, Avatar 3 could be the end of the franchise. This means that Avatar The Water's gross will play a major role in determining what comes in the future for James Cameron's films.
