An extremely rare early version of Minecraft that was thought to be lost, was discovered more than ten years after its release. Minecraft alpha 1.1.1 was released for the first Java Edition in September 2010 and was available for around three hours, but now it's been rediscovered by gaming historians.

There have been a variety of versions of Minecraft over the years, and fans have carefully saved and archived a lot of them in the interest of preservation. One version called Alpha 1.1.1, also known as Seecret Sunday, was believed to be lost. It was replaced within a few hours by version 1.1.2.

@lunasorcery on Kotaku posted the complete story of its re-discovery on Twitter. As Luna describes the story, Alpha 1.1.1 had become a meme or even a holy grail of the Minecraft archiving Discord Omniarchive and no one of them had ever expected to find it.

Someone discovered one of Luna's old tweets and inquired about it, and she discovered an old backup of minecraft.jar dated the same as Alpha 1.1.1's release - September 18 October, 2010. Luna looked over the file and confirmed that it was indeed Alpha 1.1.1, which she then published on Omniarchive - which blew up.

So I posted in Omniarchive and it wouldn't be an understatement for me to say that some people noticed.

Based on the reactions, the reality of how big a find this is begins to sink in. I feel like I'm shaking.
